Spring signups are open. Fields are getting reserved. Registration links are going out. And in the middle of all that, someone in your organization is probably wondering — are we actually covered if something goes wrong?

If you’re looking for sports insurance in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, or Pennsylvania — and you run a youth league, adult rec team, sports camp, clinic, or tournament — keep reading.

Let me tell you why this matters to me

I’m Misty Mitchell. I own Mitchell Insurance Agency and I’m an independent agent licensed across six states. But before I tell you about insurance, here’s the part that actually matters:

I have five kids. Between them, they’ve played in more than ten organized sports — baseball, basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, track, and more. I’ve spent more hours on bleachers, in gyms, on sidelines, and in parking lots at 6am than I can count.

I’ve watched coaches give everything they have for kids who needed someone in their corner. I’ve seen parent volunteers hold whole organizations together with duct tape and dedication. I know what it takes to build something for your community — and I know how fast it can fall apart if the wrong thing happens without the right coverage in place.

That’s not something I take lightly.

So who actually needs sports insurance?

Honestly — more people than realize it. If any of these sound like you, we should talk:

  • Youth leagues and adult recreational leagues
  • Sports camps and clinics — one weekend or all summer
  • Tournaments — one-day events or multi-day competitions
  • Coaching businesses and personal training operations
  • Sports facilities, courts, and training centers
  • Nonprofit athletic organizations and booster clubs
  • Running clubs, cycling groups, martial arts studios
  • Food trucks and mobile vendors working events and tournaments

Facilities require proof of insurance. Governing bodies require it. And more and more, individual families expect it. The question isn’t really “do we need it” — it’s “do we have the right kind.”

What coverage actually looks like

General Liability

This is the foundation. It covers bodily injury and property damage claims — the most common things that happen at practices, games, and events. If a player gets hurt on your field and the family comes after your organization, this is what responds.

Participant Accident Insurance

This one doesn’t get enough attention. Participant accident coverage helps pay medical expenses when an athlete gets hurt — regardless of fault. It fills the gap between what their health insurance covers and what it doesn’t. For youth organizations especially, it’s one of the most meaningful things you can offer families.

Abuse & Molestation Coverage

If your organization works with minors, you need this — period. Standard general liability policies typically exclude abuse and molestation claims entirely. This is separate coverage, and it’s not optional anymore.

Assault & Battery

Important for contact sports, tournaments with crowds, and any event where things can get heated. More common than people want to admit.

Directors & Officers and Employment Practices Liability

Running a nonprofit board? D&O protects the individuals making decisions on behalf of the organization. EPL protects against employment-related claims. Both are available for qualifying nonprofits and often overlooked until it’s too late.

Property and Inland Marine

Covers your equipment and gear — whether it lives at a facility or travels with you to events.

Liquor Liability

For tournaments with hospitality areas, adult league post-game gatherings, or fundraiser events where alcohol is served. If it’s being served, it needs to be covered.

Short-Term Event Coverage

Not every organization needs an annual policy. If you’re running one tournament or a single weekend clinic, short-term GL is available. You get real protection without paying for a full year you don’t need.

Sports we can cover

Through our multiple carrier partners  we have access to coverage for a wide range of sports. And that list is bigger than most people expect:

Baseball · Basketball · Soccer · Pickleball · Volleyball · Badminton · Flag Football · Golf · Tennis · Cornhole · Bocce · Swim Teams · Running Clubs · Cycling · BMX & Stunt Cycling · Cheerleading (all ages, competitive included) · Contact Martial Arts & Karate · Boxing · Curling · Diving · Fencing · Gymnastics · Hockey · Ice Skating · Adult Lacrosse · Rowing · Rugby · Skateboarding · Surfing · Water Polo · Wrestling

We’ve also recently added coverage for dedicated pickleball centers, volleyball courts, and basketball courts — the standalone facility side of things is growing fast and we’re keeping up with it.

It’s not just teams and leagues

We also work with:

  • Sports facilities and training centers
  • Stadiums, arenas, and racetracks
  • Golf simulators and batting cages
  • Bowling alleys and escape rooms
  • Inflatable playgrounds and arcade centers
  • Play centers and entertainment venues
  • Traveling entertainers

And if you’re a food truck or mobile vendor working sporting events and festivals — you need your own coverage in place. Most venues and event organizers require it before you can set up. We can get you what you need so you’re not scrambling the week before an event.

Annual packages for nonprofits

For organizations running year-round programs, an annual package is almost always the better move. Here’s what a full nonprofit package can include through our carriers:

  • General Liability
  • Property
  • Abuse & Molestation
  • Assault & Battery
  • Inland Marine
  • Blanket Additional Insured
  • Directors & Officers
  • Employment Practices Liability

That’s real, comprehensive protection — not just a certificate that checks a box. And we offer financing to help you spread payments from set up to the day of the event.

Already have coverage? Let’s look at it.

Renewal season is a good time to make sure your limits still match your operation. Especially if your participation numbers have grown, you’ve added new sports or programs, or your venue has updated their requirements.

A review takes about 20 minutes. It costs nothing. And it’s caught some real gaps for organizations that thought they were fine.

How to get started

No forms before we talk. No automated runaround. Just call or email and we’ll figure out what you need.

It helps to have a few things handy:
